DAVID C. YOUNG, ONE OF THE OLDEST TAZEWELL RESIDENTS, IS DEAD
David C. Young, 85 years old, a
native of Tazewell county and one of its oldest citizens, died last
evening at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Orr whom he had been making
his home.
David C. Young
was born in Elm Grove township, November 23, 1839. His marriage to
Racheal Shaw occurred in Missouri in the year 1865. His wife preceded
him in death some years ago.
He is survived
by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Duley a resident of Missouri.
Memorial
services will be held from the Kuecks Funeral Home Monday afternoon at
two o’clock. Services will be in charge of Rev. Ballenger, Tremont
pastor. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.

Resident Of Pekin,
Succumbs At Age 85;
Funeral Services To Be Saturday Afternoon
Mrs. Caroline Herget, widow of the late George Herget and one of this community’s oldest and most highly esteemed and beloved residents passed away this morning at her home 829 Washington street, the end coming a 6.10 o’clock. Mrs. Herget suffered a fall about a year ago, never fully recovering from its effects and her condition had been serious for several days past.
Mrs. Herget was a member of
St. Paul’s Evangelical church, active in its affairs for many years
and closely identified with church work. She was considerate,
benevolent and charitable, a good Christian woman, whose life had been
an influence for much good and whose memory will be cherished by those
near and dear to her.
Leaves Three Children
She is survived by two sons, Henry G Herget and William P Herget, president and vice president of the Herget National bank, one daughter Mrs. George Ehrlicher and five grandchildren, George Arthur and Mary Ehrlicher, George and Henry Harnish, all of Pekin. Mrs. George Herget (Caroline Gainer) was born in the north part of the present limits of Pekin March 22, 1840. She was the daughter of George Gainer (Goehner) and Anna Maria Conzelman, who were born near Stuttgart, Germany, and left there in 1832 for America. They located at Erie Pa. and shortly thereafter came to Pekin. Mrs. Herget’s early childhood was spent on the ??? ??? ??? Groveland, Ill.. where she lived with her parents for six years.
Married in 1861
They then moved to the farm which her father had bought from Dr. Maus (this farm has always been in the family and is at present owned by John Gainer) where she lived until her marriage to George Herget April 9, 1861 They were married in the house then located on the site of the present home of Mr. Louis Hackler, 511 Elizabeth street. Mr. and Mrs. Herget immediately moved into the home purchased by Mr Herget and still standing No. 303 North Fifth street. Here they lived until the railroad, now known as the Big Four, was built, when the family moved into the small house on the lot where the present home is located. This was in 1870 and the present home 629 Washington street was built two years later. Of the children, Henry G.; Mary L. (Ehrilcher) and Wm. P. were born in the Fourth street home and Anna Caroline was born in the present Washington Street home. She preceded her parents in death, having passed away November 29, 1910, Mr. George Herget on March 11, 1914. Mrs. Herget is the last member of her family of the following members: Martin Gainer, who died August 9, 1917 and lived for a great many years at Minier, Ill. Mary who died at an early age near Groveland Ill. Veronica (Mrs. Martin Friedinger) and John Gainer who died some years ago. Funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the residence 629 Washington street. Rev. Arno A. Zimmerman, pastor of St. Paul;’s Evangelical church will officiate and interment will be in Lakeside cemetery. Please omit flowers. Submitted by Linda Tillman

SISTER OF PEKIN TEACHER DIES IN INNIS,
LOUISIANA
Mrs., Agnes A Bross, principal of the
Franklin school this morning received a message telling of the death of
her sister, Mrs. Eva Hammond, which occurred at her home in Innis, LA
last night and which was due to heart failure.
Mrs. Hammond was a daughter of the late Dr.
H.K. and Philinda Young-Alexander and was born in Pekin 79 years ago.
She left Pekin in 1923 and since that time resides at Innis. Her husband
died several years ago.
Mrs. Hammond had many friends in Pekin and
will be kindly remembered by them as a good, kind hearted Christian
woman. She is survived by two brothers, Kenneth and Alexander of Innis
and a sister, Mrs. Agnes Bross. The funeral was held at Innes this
afternoon and burial was in the cemetery there.

Young, Teressa
– Died April 15, 1914. (Note: Many of the dates in this obituary
appear to be wrong. Tazewell County Cemeteries, Volume Eight lists a
Charles C Young and Teressa S Monaghan Young on page 351 buried in
Lakeside Cemetery. Charles C was born in 1844, died in1884 and was
married December 24, 1868. Teressa S Monaghan Young was born 1844 and
died in 1914.)
Mrs. Teressa Young, for many year one of
the most estimable women of Elm Grove township, died Saturday evening at
5:10 o’clock at the home of her son, Roy Young near Tampico Bureau
county, Illinois. Death was due to an attack of pneumonia, which she
could not recover, She had lived for many years at the old Young
homestead familiarly designated as Young’s brick yard, in Elm Grove
township about seven miles southeast of Pekin. Last September she went
to Tampico, Ill., to visit with her son, Roy. On October she contracted
a severe cold which quickly developed into pneumonia and from which she
never recovered.
Teressa S Monaghan, her maiden name, was
born in Albany, N. Y., August 12, 1944 (Ed. Note: This should be 1844.)
She came to Pekin in 1866, and lived for a time with her sister
Mrs. Henrietta Young. Her marriage was with Charles C. Young in Pekin,
December 24, 1868. The husband preceded her in death in 1884. there are
three surviving children, Roy Young, Tampico, Ill, Gilbert Young, Elm
Grove township, Mrs. Samuel T Orr, Cincinnati township. Mrs. Young was a
woman of many admirable traits of character. She was kind and charitable
to all, a devoted wife and mother, hospitable and a good neighbor. She
was a true Christian woman, and her influence was apparent wherever she
was present and it was always for good. In her departure of this like
this community, is deprived of one of its most estimable women.
The remains arrived her Sunday afternoon
and were taken to the Kuecks undertaking parlors, from where they will
be taken today to the home of Gilbert Young, in Elm Grove township. The
funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 12 o’clock.

MRS. ALICE DULEY DIES IN MISSOURI Mrs. Alice Mae Duley, who was born near Pekin Sept 23, 1867, died at Dexter, MO, Oct 10, at the age of 91 years. Funeral services were held at Dexter Sunday, Oct. 12, and burial was in Dexter cemetery. Mrs.
Duley was the daughter of David and Rachel Young. She spent her
childhood here and attended Pekin Schools, and her marriage to Henry
Duley occurred here Aug, 14 1885. The couple moved to Minnesota in 1904,
later moving to Moulton, IA, and then to Dexter. Mr. Duley died Apr. 2,

Committal service for Mrs. Anna Belle
Schurman 86, of Anaheim Cal. A native of Pekin, will be
conducted at 1 pm Thursday in Lakeside Mausoleum.
Dr. James K White, pastor of Pekin's
Grace United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Friends may call at the Noel Henderson
Funeral Home from 6 until 9 pm Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the
Optimist Children's Home in Anaheim, Cal.
A service was held today in Backs and
Kaulbars Funeral Home at Anaheim.
Mrs. Schurman died at 3:15 pm Friday,
Dec. 23, 1977, in her home, after having been ill several days.
Born in at Pekin Mar 13, 1891, she was
the daughter of Thoedore and Lena Brower Young. Her marriage to Ludwig
C Schurman occurred here Oct. 9, 1912.
The Schurman’s celebrated their 65th
wedding anniversary last October.
They moved from Pekin to Anaheim in 1944. During the years she lived
here, Mrs. Schurman was a member of Grace United Methodist Church
Surviving are her husband and several
nieces and nephews. One son, John,
died in 1936.

JOHN POTTS
1844-1924
Mrs. Ludwig Schurman has received word of
the death of her uncle, John E Potts, a former well known Pekin
resident, who died Saturday morning at Culver City, Cal. He was born
in Ohio about eighty years ago and his marriage was to Sarah Young in
Elm Grove Township. Two daughters Mrs. William Price and Miss Bell
Potts, both of Culver City survive. Mr. Potts and family left Pekin in
1912 and went to Oregon where they resided until they went to
California about a year and a half ago. The body will be brought to
Pekin and funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Ella Vaupel Logan
1887-1920
Mrs. Ella Vaupel-Logan, wife of Gilbert
Logan, of Cincinnati township, died Sunday at 12:10 o’clock at the
home of her father, John Vaupel, in Cincinnati township, after a long
illness, death being due to lung trouble.
She was a daughter of John and Emma
Gainer-Vaupel, and was born in Cincinnati township, February 1, 1887.
Her marriage to Gilbert Young (suppose to be Logan) occurred in Pekin
September 30, 1914. Her mother preceded her in
death a number of years ago, and she is survived by her husband,
father, two children, Leslie and Thelma; three brothers, Charles M.,
Ernest C., and John E Vaupel, and two sisters, Mrs. George Young and
Mrs. William Long jr, both of Elm Grove township.
Funeral services will be held at the
Woodrow Union Church, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Ballinger
of Tremont will officiate and interment will be in Woodrow cemetery.

Death of Mrs. Young
Mrs. John S Young, living five miles
southwest of Tremont, died Friday evening as a result of old age.
Mrs. John S Young was born in Ohio,
January 14, 1818, and came to this state in 1820. On February 7, 1839,
she was married to John S Young. To them were born five children, four
of whom are living - David, Seth, Sarah and Dora Young, of Pekin.
Deceased was a highly respected lady, who
accomplished much good on earth. She was a kind woman and leaves a
multitude of sorrowing friends.
Mrs. Young was a life long member of the
Christian church. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock
from the Christian church, Pekin.

Isabella Orr, 76, Succumbs at Residence
Here
Mrs. Isabella M. Orr, 76, died at her
home, 701 S. Fifth street at 9:15 p.m. Monday.
She was born in Elm Grove township on
Nov. 15, 1870, a daughter of Charles C. and Theressa Monaghan Young.
She married Samuel T. Orr in Elm Grove township on Feb. 20, 1890, and
he preceded her in death.
Surviving are a daughter, Miss Mary E
Orr, Pekin; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lenora Orr, Pekin; a brother Roy
Young, Delavan, and three grandchildren, Miss Florence and Marion Orr,
Chicago and Robert Orr, Pekin. One son Samuel W. Orr, and a brother
Charles Gilbert Young, are deceased.
The body was taken to the Kuecks Funeral
home and will be taken to the residence Wednesday morning. Friends are
asked to omit flowers. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.

Rites For James Rupp Are Set For
Wednesday
Funeral services for James Rupp, 74,
pioneer and former Elm Grove township farmer, will be held at the
Kuecks chapel at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in the Woodrow
cemetery at South Pekin and friends may call at the funeral home until
time of services.
Mr. Rupp, who for the past 20 years had
been an employe of the North Western railroad, died at 8:15 p.m.
Sunday at his home, following two months illness caused by a stroke.
He had lived in South Pekin for the past 25 years.
He was born in Elm Grove township May 6,
1867, a son of Christian and Elizabeth Weinburner Rupp. His
marriage to Alice Meskimer took place at Bloomington.
Surviving besides the wife are seven
daughters, Mrs. Dolly Kitson, Adrian, Mich; Mrs. Ida Irmeyer,
Groveland; Mrs. Gladys Cameron, Mrs. Lena Haushahn, Mrs. Irene Johnson
and Mrs. Hazel Seward, all of Chillicothe, and Mrs. Florence Johnston,
Marcelin, Mo; five sons, Grover, Allen and Orville, all of Pekin, and
Dewey and Archie, both of South Pekin; two brothers, John and Bill,
both of Peoria; a sister, Mrs. Kate Gainer, Pekin; 20 grandchildren
and several half brothers and half sisters.
